Diagnosis & Response to Current Treatment Option of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Abstract

Objectives: To chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) L ) on the basis of age, sex, socio economic status, clinical presentation laboratory findings and response to current treatment options. Study design: Observational . Place and duration of study: Departments of medicine and pathology Peoples University of Medical and Health Science for women (PUMHS), Nawabshah at Shaheed Benazirabad from January 2010 to December 2011. Patients and Methods: Total 72 patients, ranging age between 25 to 65 years, 45 male and 27 female admitted in PUMHS Hospital Nawabshah were included in this study. The clinical presentations were noted and all the blood as well as bone marrow Biopsy (BB) samples were taken from the patients and sent to the Pathology department of PUMHS Nawabshah for the analysis of complete blood count ( CBC) examination of peripheral blood and bone marrow smears for the diagnosis ofCML. Results: Out of 72 patients with leukemia, 45 (62.5%) were male and 27 (37.5%) were female, belonging to poor 46 (61.9%), lower middle class 18 (29.7%) and upper middle class 06 (8.4%) 'amities. Their ages ranged between 25 to 65 years. The most common clinical presentation in these patients were severe anemia (76.7%) with splenomegaly (72.5%). In these patients, the hemoglobin concentration, total leucocytes counts and Platelet counts were ranged between 5.5 to 12.R Rldl, 50,000 to 350.000/emm and 70,000 to 4,80,0001cmm respectively. The differential leucocytes count were showing 35% to 65% mature cells such as neutrophils 35% to 40%, lymphocytes 05% to 08%, eosinophils 08% to 12% and monocytes 06% to 08% while 45% to 55% immature cells including myeloblast 050/0 to 07%. promyelocytes 03% to 05%, myelocytes 18% to 25%, metainyclocytes 08% to 1000 and 12% to 15% band cells, The peripheral blood and bone marrow smears of these patients were showing increase number of white blood cells of all types of granulocytes . Conclusions: The CML more common in male then the female of middle and old age. The diagnosis is based on clinical and laboratory findings required urgent treatment with new drugs like Imatinib and resistant cases were shifted to Dasatinib.
